Chest Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 48 Hours

Right after your 15-minute chest wax, the best rule is simple: keep your skin cool, clean, and dry. For the first 24 to 48 hours, skip heat, sweat, pools, sun, and tight clothing so your pores can calm down. In Scottsdale, our dry heat and strong sun make this even more important. If you’ve got golf, hiking, or a gym session planned in North Scottsdale, follow the timeline below so you don’t end up with irritation or ingrowns.
Chest waxing aftercare in the first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that matter
Think of freshly waxed skin as “open and reactive” for a bit. Hair has been removed from the root, and those follicles need time to settle. I’m appointment-only, so you’ll get in and out quickly, but the at-home part is what protects your result.
0 to 24 hours: avoid hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, heavy sweating, and any product with fragrance or “active” acids.
0 to 24 hours: keep it calm
- Shower temperature: keep it lukewarm. Hot water can ramp up redness and itching.
- Sweat: skip intense workouts. Sweat plus friction is a common irritation combo on the chest.
- Clothing: wear a loose cotton tee. Tight athletic shirts tend to rub and trap heat.
- Hands off: don’t pick at little bumps. It usually makes them last longer.
24 to 48 hours: still a no for pools and sun
At this point, most people look fine but the skin can still be touchy. I generally recommend you keep avoiding anything that adds bacteria or heat to the area. That means no swimming pools, no ocean, and no hot tubs for at least 24 to 48 hours. And in Scottsdale’s sun, try to avoid peak sun hours for the first 48 hours, especially if your chest will be exposed.
Quick reality check: If you booked before a hike at McDowell Sonoran Preserve or shopping at Kierland Commons, plan your wax so you can take it easy afterward. Heat and friction are the two big troublemakers.
Days 3 to 7 after a chest wax: where ingrowns usually start
After the first 48 hours, your skin is typically calmer, but this is when people accidentally cause problems by doing too much. The goal for week one is steady, gentle care. Not aggressive scrubbing.
Start exfoliating only if your skin is calm
Wait about 48 to 72 hours before you exfoliate. If you’re still red, tender, or bumpy, give it more time. When you do start, keep it light. A gentle exfoliating mitt or a mild body scrub is usually enough. If your chest is acne-prone, stick to mild options and avoid harsh acids right away.
Avoid these common week-one mistakes
- Using retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or alcohol-based sprays on the chest for about 72 hours
- Getting a spray tan or applying heavily fragranced body oils on freshly waxed skin
- Sunbathing with a freshly waxed chest. Scottsdale sun plus freshly waxed skin can mean irritation fast.
Post-wax chest care products that actually help (and what to keep off your skin)
You don’t need a cabinet full of products. You need the right type, used at the right time. I keep my waxing space private and clean, and I want your home care to match that same “low irritation” vibe.
Good in the first 48 hours: fragrance-free aloe gel or a gentle, non-comedogenic lotion. Apply a thin layer. More product isn’t better.
Avoid for about 72 hours: retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, perfumed lotions, and anything with a strong tingle. That “active” feeling is often irritation on freshly waxed skin.
One more simple habit that helps a lot: if you sweat, change your shirt sooner than later. Letting sweaty fabric sit against your chest is a fast way to get little bumps.

What’s normal after a chest wax, and when I want you to text me
Mild redness, a little sensitivity, and tiny bumps that settle within a day or two are common. What I don’t want you to ignore is anything that looks like it’s getting worse instead of better.
- Reach out to me if redness is spreading, you see pus, you develop a rash that keeps creeping, or you’re worried you’re reacting to a product.
- Get medical care if you have fever, significant swelling, or signs of infection. Don’t wait it out.
I’ve been going to Vanessa for about a year now. She is thorough, clean, and quick! Always a pleasure seeing her! As a licensed esthetician myself I highly recommend her work.
I’m appointment-only, and I take timing seriously. If you’re someone who’s dealt with reschedules elsewhere, you’ll appreciate that I show up and keep it moving without rushing the quality.
